OHS FOR YOU AND YOUR WORKPLACE

Learning to maintain a safe workplace environment

In your working life, it is really important to keep up to date with workplace health and safety laws. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 entitles Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) to undergo appropriate training in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

You may be interested in this course if you are a HSR or Deputy HSR (DepHSR). It is not assessed against competency criteria but intended to assist you understand and exercise your knowledge effectively and make your workplace safer.

Although HSRs and DepHSRs are the primary audience, you may also benefit in attending if you are a manager, supervisor, health and safety committee member or have an interest in health and safety.

Content

The learning objectives of the course (effective 1 March 2014) are to enable:

  • Interpreting the Occupational Health and Safety legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR

  • Identifying key parties and their legislative obligations and duties

  • Establishing representation in the workplace

  • Participating in consultation and issue resolution

  • Represent designated work group members in any OHS risk management process undertaken by the appropriate duty holder/s

  • Issuing a Provisional Notice (PIN) and Directing the Cessation of Work

Entitlements (Under the OHS Act 2004 Section 67)

If your employer is requested to, they must allow an elected HSR and elected Deputy HSR to attend a WorkSafe approved HSR Initial OHS Training Course on paid time, pay the cost of the course and any other associated costs. Section 67 also allows HSRs to choose the approved training course they attend in consultation with their employer.

Delivery

This is an approved training course for Holmesglen Institute to deliver on behalf of South West TAFE and is conducted by a WorkSafe approved trainer.

Holmesglen Institute is an approved WorkSafe provider, able to deliver the Initial OHS Training Course and issue attendance certificates to participants who successfully complete the training.
