This course is very 'hands-on', so participants need to have reasonable fitness and agility to undertake the training.

What You Learn

How to undertake many of the daily tasks around a farm in a proficient and safe manner.

What You Get

The skills and knowledge required to apply for farm positions as volunteers or employees.

Materials to Bring

Photo identification (including your date of birth).

Equipment (including safety equipment) will be supplied by South West TAFE as required and will remain the property of South West TAFE.

Dress Code

Appropriate enclosed footwear and a hat and coat (according to weather conditions) to permit outdoor training.

NO PRIOR FARM EXPERIENCE?

Upskill to work or volunteer on farming properties around Australia

This 8 day course is designed to give participants without prior farm experience, the skills and knowledge required to apply for farm positions. Several social events are also arranged so you can really enjoy the experience of being with like-minded people and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of Warrnambool.

  • Care for health and welfare of livestock
  • Handle livestock

  • Operate basic machinery and equipment
  • Operate quad bikes
  • Conduct front end loader operations
  • Fencing

The topics are non-accredited (and not assessed) but are based on accredited units South West TAFE have resources and experience in delivering.

Facilitator

Peter McSween has 30 years experience dairy farming with extensive understanding of pasture management and handling stock including sheep, fencing and water/bore management. He has also worked on properties in the QLD channel country near Longreach.  Peter has successfully achieved an Advanced Diploma of Agriculture and AgVet Chemical Users certification and has undertaken recent specific training for both quad bikes and front end loaders.
