Course Times: Once a week on Fridays from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm

Students must attend all 5 days to complete the course.

What You Learn

The learning outcomes of this initial course are:

- Interpreting the occupational health and safety legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR

- Identifying key parties and their legislative obligations and duties

- Establishing representation in the workplace

- Participating in consultation and issue resolution

- Represent designated work group members in any OHS risk management process undertaken by the appropriate duty holders

- Issuing a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and directing the cessation of work.

What You Get

The aim of this WorkSafe-approved training course is to provide HSRs and Deputy HSRs with the knowledge, skills and confidence to exercise their powers for the purpose of representing members of  their designated work group and to help make their workplace safer.

Although HSRs are the primary audience, managers, supervisors, health and safety committee members and anyone with an interest in health and safety may also benefit from attending this course.

By participating and completing the 5 days of training, within a 6-month period, you will be issued a Certificate of Attendance.

Copy of the OHS Act and Folder of Course resources for use during the course and you keep these for your future reference.

A Certificate of Attendance is issued within ten days of completion of the course. Participants will need to complete seven (7) hours training per day, (excluding breaks), over five (5) days (sequentially delivered) of course completion within a six (6) month period of course commencement.

Description

This Worksafe developed course is an interactive adult learning experience and does not require assessments to be completed.Under the OHS Act 2004 (section 67), all elected HSRs and deputy HSRs are entitled to undertake WorkSafe Victoria-approved HSR initial OHS training and choose their course in consultation with their employer. SWTAFE is approved by WorkSafe to deliver the HSR Initial OHS Training Course.

Under section 67 of the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act (the OHS Act) 2004 an employer, if requested,must allow an elected HSR and elected deputy HSR to attend a WorkSafe-approved HSR Initial OHS Training Course onpaid time, pay the cost of the course and any other associated costs. Section 67 also allows HSRs to choose the course in consultation with their employer.

Whilst the primary audicence for this course is HSR Representatives - Managers and Supervisors are also welcome to attend and would benefit from understanding the HSR roles, responsibilities, powers and entitlements.
